The Kōrero of the Hoe – Te Ahu a Turanga
At Te Ahu a Turanga, the hoe (paddle) carried deep meaning. It was far more than a symbol of recognition — it represented unity, shared direction, and the collective strength of the Te Ahu Alliance.
Throughout the project, the hoe was presented to teams who demonstrated the Alliance values in action.
It acknowledged those who contributed positively to the culture of the project, upheld high safety and environmental standards, supported others, and embodied true kaitiakitanga in the way they approached their work.
Legend Xcavations was honoured to receive the hoe during the project. Receiving it once was an honour. Receiving it twice was truly humbling.
This recognition reflected our deep commitment to caring for the whenua — not only completing the required works, but actively protecting and enhancing the surrounding environment.
That included safeguarding native flora and fauna, maintaining the health of waterways, and taking particular care to protect our tuna (eels) and their habitats.
We believe environmental responsibility is not an optional extra in civil construction — it is part of the job.
The hoe also symbolised everyone paddling the same waka — different crews, different skill sets, one shared purpose.
Progress on a project of this scale only happens when people move in sync, support one another, and remain aligned to shared values.
This is why the hoe now appears within our branding. It represents the journey we undertook, the standards we committed to, and the responsibility we continue to carry as a company. When we speak with local schools and our wider community about what we do, the hoe helps tell that story.
It allows us to demonstrate that kaitiakitanga is not just something we talk about — it is something we practice.
It is seen in how we manage our sites, how we protect waterways, how we look after flora and fauna,
Te Ahu a Turanga was a significant and complex undertaking.
To be recognised among many outstanding teams affirmed our belief that civil construction can be delivered with integrity, respect, and purpose.
For us, the hoe represents forward momentum.
When we paddle together, guided by shared values, we do more than complete projects.
We build Legends.
